Boundary of three geological units

The Pomezná deposit of construction sand has been mined since the beginning of the 20th century. The raw material was used, for example, in the construction of the Skalka Dam. Exploitation of the deposit is impeded by an earth slide in the northern and northwestern foreland of the deposit. Weathered rocks of the Arzberg Formation emerge from a separate edge of the earth slide, and Smrčiny granite emerges further to the west.

The sand quarry lies near the Skalka Reservoir and the Rathsam Nature Reserve, which protects natural communities along the watercourses and marshes, where endangered species of plants and animals occur. A small hydroelectric power plant and the ruins of an old fortress, mentioned as early as 1309, are located nearby.

Entry into the sand quarry without permission is strictly prohibited
