Hirschmühle

The beauty of a defunct mill

If you take the road from Libé to Hazlov, about 1 kilometer before Hazlov you will reach places where the road is cut into the rock. On the right (in the direction from Libé) flows the Slatinný stream and the remains of a mill are still visible on it. It was called Hirschmühle or Hirschbergmühle, I have come across both names. On the right side rises an artificially modified rock wall. The rock had to give way to the road here.

The press of the time wrote about the mill:"The gorge near the Hirschmühle bridge is one of the most beautiful, wildest and most romantic places in the Upper Cheb region. For thousands of years, the Slatinný stream has made its way through this gorge, leaving behind evidence of its violent power. About 50 meters above the Hirschmühle bridge, on the right bank of the stream lies the gate of the gorge, which was created by the accumulation of huge granite boulders. On the left bank we see a massive 150 m long landslide. A century-old beech tree grows near the mill itself, and nearby there is a simple old chapel as a thank you for the hardships endured. Unfortunately, the old mill, which was built entirely of wood and with its massive five-meter mill wheel provided a breathtaking spectacle, has already disappeared. Its replacement with a brick building noticeably disturbed the beauty of our countryside."Later, however, the brick building also disappeared, and today we can only admire the ruins overgrown with greenery.
