Kopaniny was probably founded in the 12th century, but the first written mention dates back to 1315. The Zedtwitz family built a castle in Kopaniny. After the Zedtwitz family's property was divided between several family branches, Kopaniny became the seat of one of them. The local Zedtwitz territory was then called Horní Podhradí and Kopaniny was part of it.
