Loket

Medieval castle on a rock above the Ohře River

Loket is a historic town in the Sokolov District of the Karlovy Vary Region. The dominant feature of the town of Loket is the Gothic castle, whose history dates back to the 12th century. Of the original Romanesque buildings, the rotunda, the foundations of the castle tower and the foundations of the northern palace have been preserved. The castle was extensively rebuilt in the 14th century during the reign of King Wenceslas IV.

The territory is built of the granite of the Karlovy Vary massif, which solidified in the roots of the Variscan mountains that were folded 300 million years ago. The entire granite massif consists of various types of granite rocks. The granite in Loket is one of the oldest and is so characteristic that it was called the Loket-type granite. The rock is striking at first with its large crystals of potassium feldspar. In most cases, these are the fusions of two individuals, so-called twins.
