Kynžvart Castle (German: Schloss Königswart) is a rural aristocratic residence built on the border of Viennese Classicism and Empire. It is located in West Bohemia, on the edge of Slavkov Forest in the Cheb District, approximately 1.5 km southwest of the town of Lázně Kynžvart, about 20 kilometers southeast of Cheb and about 10 km north of Mariánské Lázně.
Kynžvart Castle
The castle is known primarily as the former summer residence of the Austrian Chancellor Klemens Wenceslas of Metternich. It is owned by the state and is open to the public. Metternich received important visitors at the rebuilt castle. For example, the Russian Tsar Alexander I, who brought him hogweed seeds as a gift, Tsar Nicholas I, or the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (in 1818 and 1820).
