A western town in an iron ore mine

The historical name Hochofen (Vysoká Pec) reflects the iron industry origins of the town. Iron ore mining at Vysoká Pec was documented in 1557. The most important mine Hieronymus (Jeroným) operated already before 1602, and mining continued there until the mid-19th century. Mining focused on magnetite-rich skarn deposits. A depression formed at the mine site and, today, its circular basin is used for cultural and sporting events.

The quartz vein containing hematite was probably also traced by a short adit located on the slope above the left bank of Rudenský Creek.

In the environs, we encounter traces left by the mining activities, literally, at every step. A nature trail, which has 13 stops, a length of 9 km, and an elevation gain of 200 m, familiarizes visitors with these and other points of interest. The trail is designated for use by hikers and experienced mountain bikers.
